We're All Mad Here

Needs a simple background. Will that happen? Probably not. See, I've come to a realization. I USED to make backgrounds because the person I associated myself with always did backgrounds and I was determined to be just as good as she was. Fat chance. I gave up keeping up with her skill and I'm actually happier now. I like my simple style. I love my chibis. Suck it, betch.

Anyway, in the storyline in which my (and Nix's) TF2 universe takes place, sanity and the lack thereof seems to be an underlying theme for many of the characters. Everything seems against the team and opposing forces push the characters to their breaking points.
Josef deals with his own horrific past. He witnesses his lover and unborn child shot. His daughter is kidnapped and a family friend is executed.
Harriet takes a stand against her employers and gets locked away in a burning building for her troubles. She is forced to watch her sons grow up while her twin takes her place. Thanks to the fire, she cannot breathe without her mask and her features have been marred beyond repair. (Okay. Now, I know some of you will say "But, Becca. She has her mask off now." Yes, and I have sacrificed consistency in order to show off her features.)
The other characters will get better descriptions later. My hands are cold.
